Khwarizmi International Award & Khwarizmi Youth Award; The Most Prestigious Iranian Awards in Science and Technology
The Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST), in fulfillment of its mission to identify and promote scientists, innovators and technologists at national and international levels, annually organizes an award ceremony. This prestigious event honors the laureates of the Khwarizmi International Award (KIA) and Khwarizmi Youth Award (KYA), bringing together high-ranking government officials (i.e. President of the I.R.Iran and the MSRT Minister), academics, and experts. This award was named in honor of the great Iranian Muslim scientist, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi.
History and Evolution
• 1st Session (1987): The Award was established, focusing on national research projects.
• 3rd Session (1989): The student category was added.
• 5th Session (1991): International research works were included alongside national and student ones.
• 11th Session (1997): The Award was open to submissions from Iranian researchers residing abroad.
• 26th Session (Since 2018): A special category was added to honor winning research works that had achieved success in national production field.
• Khwarizmi Youth Award (Since 2005): Officially launched to highlight research achievements by young scholars, innovators, and students.
Objectives
• Expanding the culture and knowledge of research scholarship
• Strengthening the national technology and innovation ecosystem
• Supporting the development of emerging technologies
• Supporting the commercialization of scientific and technological products
• Supporting knowledge-based entrepreneurship
• Promoting international scientific collaborations as well as national science and technology diplomacy
• Identifying and introducing elites and outstanding projects in the field of technology and domestic industries
• Supporting and attracting Iranian scientists residing abroad to participate in the Iranian scientific community
Awards and Support
The laureates of the award will be supported and appreciated as follows:
1. Awarding of the President's commendation certificate, the award trophy and a cash prize
2. Issuance of a Certificate of Achievement specifying the award ranking and percentage of contribution
3. Introduction to the National Elites Foundation to benefit from special facilities
4. Referral of laurates to funding organizations and incubators to support and accelerate their work in the development and commercialization pathway.
5. Introduction to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT) to utilize the special regulations for admission to higher education levels
6. Nomination for participation in national and international scientific and technological events
Outstanding Researcher of the Khwarizmi International Award
In 2018, a new category titled “Outstanding Researcher” was added to the Khwarizmi International Award. Under this category, an Iranian scientific figure with an exemplary social reputation and significant scientific contributions to society is honored.
This initiative aims to acknowledge and honor the valuable contributions of pioneering and distinguished figures in the fields of science and technology as well as introducing successful and inspiring role models specially for youth and adolescents.
